I just arrived at Newark and as I feel the airport energy the excitement charges up my body.
Going through security was painless, however, the United Club lounge was packed and hardly a place to sit. The food selection is sparse and nothing to write home about.
The boarding and then the flight was delayed over an hour and half. A few hours into the flight we were informed of a noxious odor coming from the bathroom and the plane was being turned around to return to an airport in Newfoundland. It has been a few hours and still no word on anything.
After 7 hrs and total of 14 hrs on plane we came back to Newark to be re-book later that night. Customer service was overwhelmed and was not going beyond the norm to help. I was downgraded to a coach ticket and was disappointed that I was not re-booked in first class. I was told. Could get a refund of miles but who cared.
They did give a hotel room for the day where at least I could shower, eat and relax a bit. As for a food voucher, they handed out laughable 3 10 dollar vouchers. I was too exhausted to argue so I headed to the hotel which thankfully got me in a room at 10:30 am.
I left the hotel at 5 pm for my 9 pm flight. I was not looking forward to my coach seat all the way to Istanbul. I reach the gate area in plenty of time to see them boarding the 6 pm flight to Brussels. I struck up a conversation with a gentlemen that I was on my grounded flight. While at counter, I saw this efficient gentlemen handling ticket bookings from the later 9 pm flight. I decided to tell him my tall of woe of being cast out of garden of Eden known as first class and if he could help me get a flight that would re-booked me to back into First Class. Lo and behold, he booked me in FC going into Frankfort and then onto Istanbul. All is right with world.
